Product Description

Agave 'White Rhino' is a striking variegated cultivar prized for its bold coloration and compact, sculptural form. It is a selected variegated form within the Agave isthmensis / Agave potatorum complex, and like its parents it forms a small, tightly held rosette that fits comfortably in containers and small garden settings.

The defining feature of 'White Rhino' is its dramatic variegation, with broad creamy white to pale yellow margins framing a blue-green to gray-green leaf center. The contrast is bold and consistent across the rosette, giving the plant a luminous quality that stands out in any collection. Leaves are short, broad, and gently cupped, edged with small reddish-brown teeth and tipped with a short terminal spine, lending the rosette a rugged character that contrasts pleasingly with the soft coloration.

In cultivation, Agave 'White Rhino' performs best in bright light, with some protection from the harshest midday sun in hot climates to avoid scorching the pale margins. It prefers warm temperatures and a fast-draining, mineral-rich soil mix. Watering should be regular but moderate during the active growing season, with markedly drier conditions through the cool months. The plant is moderately frost tolerant when kept dry but appreciates protection from prolonged cold.

Like many select variegated agaves, 'White Rhino' grows slowly, and each new leaf is a small event as the variegation pattern reveals itself. The plant tends to remain compact and may produce a small number of offsets over time, which can be separated to propagate the cultivar.

This is a highly desirable variegated form, and well-grown specimens are uncommon in the trade. The combination of bold color, refined form, and small mature size makes Agave 'White Rhino' one of the most collectible agave cultivars available to growers today.
