Product Description

Agave isthmensis "Ohi Raijin" is a celebrated Japanese-selected variegated cultivar of Agave isthmensis, a compact dwarf species native to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of southern Mexico. The cultivar name, often translated as "Yellow Thunder God," reflects the bold golden-yellow variegation that makes this plant one of the most sought-after small agaves in cultivation.

The rosette of "Ohi Raijin" is dense and tightly held, formed by short, broad, gently cupped leaves with prominent reddish-brown to nearly black marginal teeth and a stout terminal spine. The variegation typically presents as a wide central band or irregular stripes of bright yellow to creamy gold against a blue-green to gray-green leaf base, with each plant expressing its own unique pattern. The contrast between the soft, glowing variegation and the dark armed margins gives the cultivar its dramatic visual impact.

Mature rosettes remain quite small, typically reaching only six to ten inches across, making this an ideal container specimen and a frequent subject for collectors who favor refined, sculptural plants. The dwarf habit, combined with the striking coloration, has made "Ohi Raijin" a staple of high-end agave collections, particularly within the Japanese horticultural tradition where it was selected and refined.

In cultivation, Agave isthmensis "Ohi Raijin" thrives in bright light with some protection from intense direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the pale variegated tissue. It prefers warm temperatures, a fast-draining mineral soil mix, and moderate watering during the growing season followed by drier conditions through the cool months. Like most agaves, it is sensitive to overwatering and excellent drainage is essential.

Growth is slow but steady, and the plant occasionally produces offsets that can be separated to propagate the cultivar. Each new leaf is a small reveal as the variegation expresses itself. With patient cultivation, "Ohi Raijin" develops into a beautifully proportioned specimen that ranks among the most collectible variegated agaves available.
