Product Description
Echinocactus grusonii ‘brevispinus’ is a highly sought-after form of the classic golden barrel cactus, selected for its shorter, more compact spination and exceptionally clean, architectural appearance. Native to central Mexico, Echinocactus grusonii is one of the most recognizable globular cacti in cultivation, valued for its perfectly ribbed body and dense crown of golden-yellow spines that intensify in color and structure as the plant matures.
This is a seed-grown specimen established in an 8” pot and already showing strong, mature character. The plant currently appears to be either a single cactus with three distinct heads or a tight grouping of three individuals growing in extremely close proximity. At this stage, the true structure remains unclear, as the stems are so closely associated that full confirmation will only be possible once the plant is bare-rooted for shipping and the root system can be examined directly.
Regardless of whether it resolves as a clustered single plant or multiple individuals, the specimen has excellent symmetry, strong ribbing, and dense, well-formed spination consistent with the brevispinus selection. The overall effect is a bold, sculptural barrel cactus with a particularly refined spine profile compared to standard E. grusonii.
In cultivation, Echinocactus grusonii ‘brevispinus’ thrives in full sun, very well-draining mineral soil, and infrequent deep watering during the warm growing season. It is slow-growing but extremely long-lived, eventually forming a substantial, architectural specimen that becomes a centerpiece in any cactus collection.
This is a well-grown, seed-raised plant with strong collector appeal, made even more interesting by its currently unresolved multi-head versus multi-plant structure that will be clarified during bare-rooting. Either outcome represents a high-quality, desirable example of this classic barrel cactus form.
