Product Description
Dorstenia gigas is one of the most striking and architectural caudiciform plants in cultivation, prized for its tree-like form and dramatic swollen trunk. Native to the island of Socotra, this species stands apart from other Dorstenia with its thick, bottle-shaped caudex and upright branching habit, eventually forming a miniature succulent tree over time.
Seed-grown Dorstenia gigas develop a strong central trunk early on, with smooth gray-green skin that gradually thickens and gains character with age. Even at a young stage, these plants show the beginnings of their signature structure, making them especially rewarding for growers who enjoy watching a specimen mature into a sculptural centerpiece. Seasonal foliage emerges at the tips of branches, accompanied by small, geometric green inflorescences typical of the genus.
In cultivation, Dorstenia gigas prefers bright light, warm temperatures, and a fast-draining soil mix. During active growth, it benefits from consistent watering with time to dry slightly between cycles, while in cooler periods it may slow down and require less moisture. Compared to other caudiciforms, it is relatively forgiving when given stable conditions.
Offered here are seed-grown plants in 3.5” pots, selected for healthy early trunk development and strong growth. These younger specimens are ideal for collectors looking to grow out their own Socotran “tree” from an early stage, with all the character and presence this species is known for developing over time.
Dorstenia gigas is a true standout for any caudiciform or succulent collection—rare, visually bold, and deeply rewarding as it matures.
