Product Description

Cussonia paniculata, commonly known as the "mountain cabbage tree," is a small pachycaul tree native to the high-altitude grasslands and rocky outcrops of southern and eastern South Africa, particularly in the Drakensberg region. The plant is a member of the Araliaceae family (the ginseng family) and is valued in cultivation for its remarkable swollen, water-storing caudex-like trunk that thickens substantially with age, taking on a rough, corky bark texture, combined with a striking crown of large, palmately compound, deeply divided blue-green to gray-green leaves. The leaves are leathery and waxy, often glaucous, and can reach a foot or more across in mature plants, lending the tree a tropical yet refined appearance even in small specimens.

In summer, mature Cussonia paniculata produces large branched panicles of small, yellowish-green flowers at the top of the crown, typically bisexual (each flower carrying both male and female parts on the same bloom), though some flowers may occasionally be functionally unisexual. The species is generally considered neither dioecious nor monoecious. Pollinated flowers develop into small, fleshy, purplish to nearly black drupe-like fruits that attract birds for seed dispersal. In cultivation, the species prefers bright light to full sun, mild to warm temperatures, and a fast-draining mineral-rich soil mix. It is moderately cold tolerant given its high-altitude native range and benefits from regular watering during the growing season followed by a drier winter rest.
