Product Description

Adenium arabicum is a striking pachycaul shrub or small tree in the Apocynaceae family, native to the arid mountains and rocky slopes of the southwestern Arabian Peninsula, particularly Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Closely related to the more familiar Adenium obesum (the "desert rose"), this species is distinguished by its more massive, broadly conical to bottle-shaped caudex base, which can grow substantially wider relative to its height than that of its relative, often developing multiple stout primary trunks branching low from the swollen base. The bark is smooth and pale gray to pinkish-gray, and the plant carries thick, glossy dark green leaves clustered at the tips of the stout branches during the active growing season.

In spring and early summer, often before or with the new flush of leaves, Adenium arabicum produces clusters of showy, funnel-shaped flowers, typically pink to deep rose with paler throats, although color can vary substantially. Each flower carries both male and female parts on the same bloom, so the species is neither dioecious nor monoecious. Pollinated flowers develop into paired slender follicles (typical of the family) that split lengthwise at maturity to release flat seeds tipped with silky white plumes adapted for wind dispersal. In cultivation, Adenium arabicum requires full sun to very bright light, hot summer temperatures, and a fast-draining mineral-rich soil mix. It is a strict summer grower and benefits from regular watering during active growth with a strict dry winter rest. As with all Adenium, the sap is toxic and should be handled with care.
