Product Description
Adenia spinosa is one of the most iconic and recognizable caudiciforms from southern Africa, native to the rocky, well-drained slopes of South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. It is celebrated for its massive, dome-shaped caudex, which can become enormous in habitat, sometimes reaching several feet across and forming a striking, boulder-like presence in the landscape.
In cultivation, Adenia spinosa develops a smooth, pale green to gray-green caudex that retains chlorophyll in its outer layer, allowing the plant to photosynthesize through its bark even when leafless. From the upper crown of the caudex emerge slender, lightly spined branches that produce small, deeply lobed leaves during the active growing season. These branches give the species its name and provide an attractive textural contrast to the smooth, swollen base.
This is a summer grower that benefits from bright light, warm temperatures, and a very fast-draining soil mix with a high mineral content. It responds well to regular watering once new growth resumes and should be kept noticeably drier through the cool months, when the upper branches may die back partially or entirely. Overwatering during dormancy is the most common cause of issues, so a clear seasonal rhythm is essential.
Growth is steady rather than fast, but the rewards are substantial. With patient cultivation, the caudex thickens and broadens, taking on the rounded sculptural form that has made this species a cornerstone of caudiciform collections worldwide. Mature specimens are particularly valued and command a premium in the market.
As with all Adenia species, the sap is toxic and the spines on the upper branches require careful handling. Adenia spinosa remains one of the most rewarding and visually impressive caudiciforms a collector can grow.
